Despite the Angels edition by Madeline A Stringer Paranormal Romance eBooks Reviews
Despite the Angels by Madeline Stringer is a gentle, entertaining romantic comedy. The story winds its way through ancient Crete, pre-revolutionary France, 1800s Scotland to modern day Dublin as spirit guides struggle to get and keep two souls, Lucy and David, together. From the outset I couldn't help feeling that these two souls were destined to be together but I was still compelled to accompany them on their journey to find out how it would all turn out.
In this story the human and spirit worlds are parallel. I loved the human traits and emotions Stringer endows to the spirit guides as they help and root for the souls they are responsible for. I smiled as I imagined their spirit energies dancing in celebration and poking their human souls to get their attention. As well as being central to the story, the spirit guides provide a humorous backdrop to the serious problems their human souls face.
Stringer writes in a thoughtful, understated way that brings the people and places she writes about to life. I read the last page of this book with a smile on my face and can heartily recommend it to anyone who enjoys an entertaining, uplifting story.
I wasn't sure about this story at first, the beginning was slightly rough in my opinion, but once I got caught up in the story, I really enjoyed it.
I really enjoyed Despite the Angels. I wouldn't normally go for something with Angels, but this book is well-written and these angels aren't religious in any way.
The story is great and flow's really nicely and the supernatural is ironically natural (a great sign of the writing). The characters are very real and compelling, and I grew attached to them and their various incarnations, but this meant that I found some of the book incredibly sad (then again I am a bit of a sap).
Thumbs-up to Despite the Angels for a solid story, interesting characters and being very well-written. This book would be a great pool-side read, or for whittling away a plane/train journey.
I loved the authors style and the way I was able to fall just as much in love with the guides through their behind the scene conversations as I was with the main characters. It left me wanting a little more detail in the ending but the overall love story through the centuries is well worth the fifth star I gave it!
Thought-provoking and highly engaging story of the various lives of two star-crossed lovers through their own eyes and those of their guardian angels across time.
Beautifully sensuous descriptions of life and love in ancient Crete contrast starkly with the vivid reality of life in modern (and not to modern) Dublin.
If you like Celia Ahern or Maeve Binchy, with the added dimension of past-lives and the reality of our own immortality, then you'll love this book.
This compelling, lighthearted story links the apparently disparate lives of a small group of people living in different parts of the world and seemingly separated from each other by centuries and in one case by millennia. In truth there is no disconnection for the main characters are the same reincarnated beings, experiencing and learning from their different human lives which regularly end tragically. Despite the presence of "guardian angels" guiding them they learn very slowly indeed trying the almost infinite patience of their "minders". The story ends on a happy note but in keeping with the thrust of the plot one can imagine that the characters face further painful learning in their future.
The author has skillfully constructed this entertaining story. Her descriptive powers are strong. She clearly has personal knowledge of the locations in which she locates the different episodes of the the novel and has studied, in detail, the history of the eras in which she situates the earlier reincarnations of her characters. The narrative is effectively developed, the dialogues of the guardians and the reincarnated personalities separated typographically. She writes in short, well formulated sentences which makes the story a joy to read. I loved the many pithy phrases throughout the story and in particular the description of a groomsman at a wedding as "All Best man efficiency"
A keen sense of humour pervades the story. The writer pokes gentle fun at the humans who rarely seem to see what is staring them in the face and at the many seemingly irrational beliefs and practices of religion, ancient and modern. Even the sometimes fallible, uncertain guardians who mess up quite as much as the souls they are guiding do not escape unscathed.
This book belongs to a genre of fiction that I do not normally read. Nonetheless I enjoyed it very much and look forward to the further novel by the author to be published next year, a taster of which is included at the end of the present book.
I would recommend "Despite the Angels" to anyone who enjoys a good, entertaining read and have no hesitation in awarding it five stars.
