At 61 years old, the author finally undertakes her 21-year old dream of hiking the 230+ mile John Muir Trail through California's Sierra Nevada's highest peaks. Her pack is too heavy, pain wracks her shoulders and feet, and then she meets a hiking team of a father, son and his friend who have problems of a different sort. Within the adventures of the trail, they develop a multitude of friendships whose support and companionship lift each person higher, all the way to the peak of Mt. Whitney.

I really enjoyed the author's tone and her story. I was confused by some of her decisions, especially for someone who is a seasoned hiker. She carried WAY too much weight, most of which was food for the WHOLE trip!! No one does that. Said food was way too little--granola and soups--for the energy and strength she needed. She almost didn't carry a bear container, even though it is mandatory. Seems like she just winged it with little research for this trail. All in all though, I recommend it. Good stories, good people, fantastic photos and lots of them. Maybe you can learn from her mistakes.

Savvy Solo Senior Adventures Hiking the John Muir Trail eBook Sayward Ayre Reviews
Enjoyable read with many pictures which I loved! As another "senior citizen" who loves the out of doors, especially hiking it is very inspiring to read about someone who decided to tackle the JMT at 61 with no experience backpacking big trails (other than a shorter, very negative one years earlier). Her honest admission of worries about making it up the high passes and overcoming her foot problems as well as big self-doubts about finishing her hike at all make her real and human to fellow hikers like myself. My only minor criticism concerns some of her decisions about equipment. Why a bivy sack when she was camping in a tent? Why the adamant refusal to re-supply which required carrying so much unnecessary pack weight? Why the dinner menu of soups? It seemed that she skipped some big prep reading that scanning just a few JMT trail accounts make clear (appetite increases, cold nights etc.). She comes across as a bit overly judgemental at times concerning neighboring camper noise and other items but I find myself doing the same as I age (along with wisdom comes more opinionated views at least for me!).
Overall, an enjoyable reading with more pictures than usually found with this type of book.
I loved this well written book. Saywards's vivid descriptions and great pictures made me feel that I was right there with her. Reading this book made me want to put on my hiking boots and hit the trail.
This book was well written and kept me entertained. As someone who could relate to a someone over 60 on a thru hike this book gave me hope that someday I too can achieve my dream. Good book! I felt like I was there!
