When fifteen-year-old Sophia Goodman meets Billy Carter and touches his hand, her very essence hums with pleasure. Sophia is so addicted to his touch she ignores Billy's strange behavior. It's obvious he's hiding something, but by the time she realizes Billy isn't as he seems, she finds herself thrust into a world filled with magic and mythological creatures.

The Outcasts City in Ruins eBook KC Gray

I've read a lot of books, and I am a writer myself. Very seldom do I run into a book that makes me anticipate the second book.

This is a tale of epic proportions. The world in which it is set is unique and fascinating. The realism behind the fantasy idea is also powerful, which makes it easy to relate to the concepts within the book.

My favorite thing about the book are the characters, and their development and progression.

Sophia jumps out of the pages and comes to life before you as you read. Vivid descriptions of environments and character actions and emotions really draw you into the story.

I'm very critical when reading a book and couldn't find anything to complain about with this one. A lot of care was taken even down to the technical writing. I couldn't find any grammar, spelling or punctuation errors.

Bottom line: A lot of care and time was taking into the writing of this book and it shows. Highly recommended to anyone who loves a good read. Looking forward to more set in this same world.

The Outcasts City in Ruins eBook KC Gray Reviews

*I received this book free from the author in exchange for an honest review*

K.C. Gray paints a new picture for gargoyles and their evolution. Their history, evolution, prophecies, rules – it all paints a picture unlike one I’ve read before.

Sophia isn’t quite sure what she’s looking for, but when she feels the unexplainable pull toward a mysterious boy she wants to question it, but by the time she does it’s entirely too late. She followed a feeling, one that she can no longer feel, and finds herself basically a prisoner of a world she never knew existed.

Billy told her he was a recruiter, he just didn’t elaborate. He was there to do a job, one that didn’t entirely lead to her, but he was addicted to her touch and couldn’t leave her. He had to have her, bring her with him, even if it wasn’t her time.

In The Outcasts City in Ruins rules get broken, worlds begin to collide, and in the end a life is given in the name of protection.

When I first began reading I wasn’t entirely sure what to expect, but as I got further and further into the story I couldn’t wait to see what would happen next. Truth be told…I still can’t. The ending definitely left me wanting more. For anyone who’s super strict with their genres, as a mom I feel I should say that the book is labeled YA and although there’s an occasional cuss word and insinuations of sex I believe it still falls into the YA category. It doesn’t cross any lines and I’d definitely let my 13 year-old read it.

My Favorite Moment I have to admit I really enjoyed when Sophia punched a ‘precious unicorn’. He deserved it!
Sophia Goodman is an angst-ridden fifteen-year-old girl who finds solace in a special place deep in the woods behind her house. One day she meets a mysterious young man there about her same age. They seem to have a few things in common and when he touches her she is overcome with a feeling of peace. Mesmerized by Billy Carter’s touch they start meeting in her special place nightly.

Then Billy gets impatient and starts manipulating Sophia. That is where the story lost me. Billy has big secrets. The world he lives in is well developed and described. The characters are diverse and their dialogue fits the story well. I just couldn’t get invested in Sophia or Billy. Especially when Sophia turns out to be just as selfish and manipulative as Billy. I could find no integrity to grasp hold of.

Bottom line is I don’t think this book was for me. Other than the numerous proofing issues the story has a nice flow. It’s about a harsh world with a detailed history, a rigid ruler with a manipulative wife, and a prophecy. This prophecy may or may not include Sophia if she has any say in the future.

FYI There are a few F-bombs dropped. **Originally written for "BigAl’s Books and Pals" book blog. May have received a free review copy.** April 27, 2017
Format/Typo Issues I came across several minor proofing errors such as missing, extra, or wrong words.
Very well written. I really enjoyed the book!

An excellent, fun, and unique read. The characters were well-written, the plot solid. I gobbled the story up in no time. I look forward to the books that follow.
I first read this book years ago when it was in draft form. I loved it then and even more when I read the finished copy. Thank you K. C. Gray for your creativity and talent in writing. I am patiently waiting to read the sequel!
This is a great book for someone willing to step away from the standard formula. Once I started reading, I couldn't stop. Even when I was finished with the story, I wanted more!
